Saudi mining company Ma'aden has acquired a 10 percent stake in Brazilian base metals company Vale. This corporate action strengthens Saudi Arabia's position in the global industry. Ma'aden through his investment company, Manara, which he founded with the Public Investment Fund, signed a binding agreement to acquire a 10 percent stake in Vale Base Metals on Thursday (27/7/2023), based on a company value of US$26 billion. This transaction funded by Ma'aden's own resources is subject to regulatory approval, and is expected to be completed in Q1/2024. The US$2.6 billion deal has set the stage for a potentially important shift in the metals and mining investment landscape, namely the arrival of Saudi Arabia as a key player. Over the years, major producers have repeatedly lost ground to Chinese firms in buying mines. Chinese-owned metal and mining companies are willing to pay valuations that western companies cannot match.
