
#OPINIONLEADER# An unprecedented resurgence of the Corona virus has erupted in Japan in recent days recording an average of 14,000 new cases on a daily basis. Health officials including senior adviser to the Government has proposed for a nationwide state of emergency and lockdown within the nation to contain the virus.
Japanese nation has witnessed an unprecedented daily increase and resurgence in the spread of the Corona Virus. Recently, the health department has reported more than 20,000 confirmed new cases of the Virus within the country. With a record of about 992,000 infections and nearly 16,000 deaths since the inception of the pandemic.
The country has witnessed the highest daily total increase of the COVID-19 virus on Wednesday with over 14,000 new cases of the virus reported in a single day, setting another record just days after hitting the previous highs. This unwelcome incidence has raised great concerns amongst her health officials who blamed the strain on the medical system in Tokyo, where the Olympics are being held. With the region recording the highest cases so far with 3,865 new cases recorded this Wednesday in Tokyo alone.
The Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato told newsmen that such an increase has been unprecedented with many blaming the Olympics ongoing in Tokyo for such a rapid spread. In his remarks,
“We experienced the expansion of the infections of this magnitude,” Further he expressed that the new cases were soaring not only in the Tokyo area but across the country but with the highest records in this region.
Equally, a top medical adviser to the Japanese government, Dr. Shigeru Omi says discussions are underway to decide if states of emergency should be declared nationwide and a total lockdown similarly imposed to contain the increasing new cases of the virus.
Already regional states of emergency had been declared in some regions within the country following the resurgence of the epidermic.
Dr. Shigeru however believes that this state of emergency and lockdown should be made a national declaration to further restrict movement leading to increased spread of the virus.
Nevertheless, the capital is currently struggling to contain a resurgence of this cases of coronavirus despite being under its fourth pandemic state of emergency is the since outbreak of this virus.
Ten other prefectures, including neighboring Saitama and Chiba, also logged new records the same day.
Japan reported record single-day figures for five consecutive days through Sunday, when it logged more than 12,000 cases.
The government of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is considering placing eight prefectures including Fukushima, Tochigi and Aichi under a quasi-state of emergency from Sunday to the end of the month due to growing cases of infections, people close to the premier said. A decision is expected on Thursday.
Some of those prefectures have asked the government for the quasi-emergency entailing business restrictions similar to the state of emergency but with smaller penalties for non-compliance.
According to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus made up 90 percent of infections in the Kanto region in eastern Japan, including Tokyo, and 60 percent in western Japan as of early August.
Tokyo's latest tally topped 4,058 cases reported on Saturday. The capital's seven-day rolling average of infections also rose to a record 3,478.7 per day, up 78.0 percent from the previous week.
