The Foreign Exchange (Forex) Market is open 24 hours a day. Although the U.S. foreign exchange (Forex) market closes on Friday at 5 pm EST (Eastern Standard Time) and opens on Sunday 5 pm EST, forex trading and some forex news do take place over the weekend through central banks and other organizations.
Forex is traded globally, but there are three main trading sessions that together form the whole trading day. They are named by their most important financial centres: Tokyo/Sydney, London and New York.
Although there are times when the forex market is volatile, there are some currency pairs that show different activity over certain times of the trading day depending on which geographic market participants are online at the time. Some other factors such as whether there are any forex news in Asia that may happen.
Generally, peak activity periods are the Asian, European, and North American sessions, which are also called Tokyo, London, and New York.
